About us

The Hungarian Academy of Engineering (HAE) was established on January 29, 1990, following the enactment of Law 2 of 1989 in Hungary, which encouraged the formation of various societies and associations amidst a changing regime. The HAE, inspired by global examples, was formed to unite Hungary’s finest in the engineering and technical sciences field, initially comprising 42 distinguished members, and now boasts a membership of 180 experts. This non-profit organization is dedicated to promoting the advancement of engineering both within Hungary and internationally, emphasizing the responsible application of engineering knowledge for societal benefit.

Mission

The HAE’s mission is to lead in the application of science and engineering principles to address Hungary’s societal, environmental, economic, and technical challenges. It aims to provide strategic advice to policymakers and contribute to the development of engineering practices that ensure the well-being of Hungarian citizens. The academy honors exceptional engineering achievements and services to the profession, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.

Values

The HAE upholds values central to its operation and interaction with the wider community:

  • Integrity: Conducting activities with transparency, honesty, and professional responsibility.
  • Excellence: Recognizing and celebrating creativity, technical prowess, entrepreneurship, collaboration, and the impact of Hungarian engineering.
  • Leadership: Offering visionary insights that encourage positive development and promote equity, diversity, and inclusion within the engineering sector.
  • Service: Utilizing a systems approach to champion social, environmental, and economic stewardship, aligning with Hungary’s interests.
  • Relevance: Delivering engineering advice that directly contributes to the prosperity, safety, and health of Hungarian society.
  • Inclusivity: Advancing a diverse and inclusive engineering community, reflective of the HAE’s commitment to embracing a wide range of perspectives and expertise.

History

The HAE was founded in the wake of significant legal and societal changes in Hungary, specifically designed to serve as an independent forum and action body for addressing national issues through an engineering lens. Its formation was a direct response to the newfound legal freedoms following the regime change, aiming to encapsulate the collective aspirations and intellectual capital of Hungary’s engineering elite.

Over the years, the HAE has established itself as a vital contributor to the global engineering dialogue, gaining recognition through memberships in international bodies such as the Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS) and the European Council of Applied Sciences and Engineering (Euro-CASE), reflecting its status and the quality of its contributions to the engineering sciences.

The evolution of the HAE, from its inception to becoming a cornerstone of the Hungarian and international engineering communities, signifies the academy’s enduring commitment to fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and service, guided by its foundational values and mission.
